Four More Languages, and the Names Finally Come From Nightreign

Fourteen languages now. French, Italian, Polish and Russian join on the same terms as the ten already here: 172 boss and creature names, the merchant catalogue, and 203 interface strings each, matched entry by entry against what was already on the site.

The four new languages are the smaller half of this release. The larger half is what adding them turned up in the ten that were already here.

Where the merchant names used to come from

Nightreign reuses its weapons, skills and spells from Elden Ring. When this site first built the merchant catalogue, no Nightreign text dump carried those names, so it read them out of Elden Ring's own translations instead. Same weapon, same spell, so the same word in every language. That was the reasoning, and it was mostly right.

Mostly. Nightreign shipped its own translations, and they do not always agree with Elden Ring's. This release re-reads every name from Nightreign's own text files, and 52 of them changed across nine languages.

433 names Arabic never had

Arabic got the worst of it, and for a reason that had nothing to do with Arabic. Elden Ring never shipped in Arabic. So when the catalogue was built from Elden Ring's text, there was nothing to read for the weapons, skills and spells, and 433 of the 576 entries fell back to English. If you read the site in Arabic, three quarters of the merchant page has been in English this whole time.

Nightreign did ship in Arabic. All 433 are there now.

The 52 corrections

The one worth singling out is Japanese. The Grossmesser's name used a horizontal bar where it needed the katakana long-vowel mark: two characters that are nearly indistinguishable at label size, and the entry did not match a search for its own name. If you ever typed that weapon into the merchant search in Japanese and got nothing, that was why.

The rest are ordinary, and naming them is the only way you can check my work:

•Latin American Spanish, thirteen. A boss's name was spelled Mielos instead of Milos in two places, Shamshir had lost a letter, one name disagreed with itself about number, one had an ungrammatical *de el*, and the Executioner's Greataxe was missing the word that makes it a greataxe.

•Korean, four. An older Elden Ring wording for two skills, a spell and a weapon, where Nightreign uses different words entirely.

•Simplified and Traditional Chinese, eight. Three weapons named after a person were missing the possessive, and two nouns were the short form of the word rather than the one Nightreign uses.

•Brazilian Portuguese, eleven. The Warpick was a sledgehammer, the Starcaller Cry called rather than clamoured, and four names now hyphenate the way the game hyphenates them.

•German, seven. Parry is *Parieren*, not *Parade*.

•European Spanish, five, and Arabic, three.

Where a difference was only a trailing space, the site keeps its own version. The game has a few of those and they buy you nothing.

Some German and Spanish effect names got longer

A handful of weapon effects on the merchant page were shortened by hand when the catalogue was built, mostly the ones about charged attacks. Those now read the way the game writes them, in full. It is more accurate and it is also more words, so if one of them now looks cramped in its row, that is worth telling me about.

Your language, if it is one of the four

Same as when Korean and German arrived in 1.6.08. If your browser asks for French, Italian, Polish or Russian and you were here before today, there was no such language to give you, so whatever you picked instead got stored, and a language you pick by hand always beats the one the site detects.

Adding a language clears that stored choice once, and only for the people whose own language is the one arriving. Pick English again with French sitting in the menu and it stays picked, for good. If your language was already here, none of this touches you.

Thai, and why it is not here

Nightreign ships in Thai. This site does not, and I would rather say why than leave it looking like an oversight.

The game's Thai text keeps a lot of its vowels and tone marks in a private corner of Unicode, as position-adjusted variants instead of the standard letters. That is normal for the fonts the game uses and useless outside them. It affects 137 of the roughly 690 names the site would need. Left as they are, those would render as empty boxes in a browser. Taken out, the words would be misspelled. Neither is shippable, and the identity of each of those characters is something I can narrow but not yet prove. Thai waits until I can.

Also

Boss names the site deliberately keeps in their short English form — Morgott, Astel, Mohg and a few others — are translated in the four new languages, because the game does carry them, just filed under a longer title. The Sorcerer's Rise puzzle labels and the site's own map annotations are translated too.

The six community event names stay in English in every language, including the four new ones. Nightreign has no official name for any of them, so there is nothing to translate them from.

Four new languages, four new sets of mistakes. If you read French, Italian, Polish or Russian and something on the map or the merchant page is wrong, tell me and I will fix it.
